NickT: GMail

I decided the other day to try and get a Google GMail account, and quickly discovered that they're invitation only.

Various sites seem to be trading in these invites, but even though I mentioned it was my birthday, nobody was feeling generous.

I then discovered the following site: GMail Randomizer, which rewards you with an invite if you are lucky enough to have "GMAIL" displayed on its randomly generated page. Apparently this could take an average of 40,000 refreshes before you won. Now, I know that I'm sad, but I'm not that sad.

So, I wrote a Visual Basic program which did the refreshing for me, and saved pages containing messages not seen previously. The logic here being that I didn't know what the "You've Won" message would look like. Well 20,000 runs later, it worked! I sent the code from the winning page to the site owner, and he sent me the invite as promised. Unfortunately nick.taylor@gmail.com had already gone, so I had to settle for the slightly less cool, taylor.nick@gmail.com!

What do you mean, I'm sad?
